The Donate Don’t Waste pilot in Arklow aims to understand attitudes and behaviours around unwanted clothing and home textiles, share information on where and what to donate, and make donations easier through increased donation points.
Why donate?
All clothing and home textiles have value and keeping them in circulation for longer within Ireland has potential to save environmental resources and create local jobs and training opportunities. In Ireland, about 68,000 tonnes of textiles are discarded every year by householders and commercial users. If just 15% of discarded textiles were reused, there could be environmental savings of over 100,000 tonnes of carbon.
Charity shops are the main drivers of textile reuse, with about 14,500 tonnes reused by the Irish Charity Shops Association, whose members include charity shops in Arklow. Through reselling textiles, these shops raise funds for people in need and create local jobs and training opportunities.
Announcements
Community collections of clean and dry unwanted clothing and home textiles will take place in May and June. Simply use your own bags, fill them with CLEAN and DRY clothing and home textiles, bring them to one of the collections specified below.
Wednesday, 25 May 3:30-5:30pm at St. Mary’s College carpark
Wednesday, 1 June 10am-3pm at Arklow Recycling Centre
Both collections will benefit SVP – Vincent’s Charity Shops East Region, the project’s charity partner

Join the Donate Don’t Waste launch on 18 May at 3:30pm at St. Mary’s College concert hall to learn more about this innovation and demonstration project.

Community members can donate clean and dry unwanted clothing and home textiles at existing collection points, including charity shops in Arklow, and at community collections taking place on Wednesday, 25 May 3:30-5:30pm at St. Mary’s College carpark and on Wednesday, 1 June 10am-3pm at Arklow Recycling Centre, both of which will benefit SVP – Vincent’s Charity Shops East Region. Arklow businesses can host a textile collection and share Donate Don’t Waste information with customers.
Schools & community groups can share the survey and Donate Don’t Waste information with students, families, group members.
